That's terrible that a pilot was killed and some people there are asking more pilots to take flight and fight the fires at night, in the dark, flying in the smoke which will certainly be extremely dangerous for them, if not fatal.

That is a sad situation - he was a hero in every sense of the word. Protect yourself by staying indoors and closing all doors and windows because of the smoke. I also read the fire is moving towards the City - is that true?

HEALTH WARNING

The Canterbury District Health Board has reissued its advice for those concerned about the thick smoke billowing over parts of Christchurch.

Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the smoke would be unpleasant for most people, but carried no risk to their health.

Smoke may irritate the eyes, nose, throat and airways, and more serious symptoms could include a runny or sore nose, dry or sore throat, sore nose, cough, tightness of the chest, or difficulty breathing.

"Avoid exposure where possible by staying indoors and closing windows and doors," Humphrey said.

Most symptoms would disappear soon after the exposure to smoke ended, but medical treatment should be sought if symptoms worsened, especially for those with asthma, or lung or heart disease.

Call 111 in an emergency, but call your usual general practice team for all other health care needs.

So, it looks like they have halted the fires. That's good.

This is so sad that this hero was killed and he left a wife and two very young children.

Quote:A HERO'S LEGACY

Steve Askin, 37, died when his helicopter crashed near Sugarloaf on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife and two children, aged 4 and 7.

Askin was a highly qualified and respected pilot, who loved flying and fighting fires. He enlisted in the army in 1998 and left in 2013, although he remained an active member of the SAS reserves.

He was awarded the New Zealand Gallantry Star – the second highest a soldier can receive for acts of gallantry, behind the Victoria Cross – for his efforts fighting in Afghanistan in 2014.

The accident is being investigated by police, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Transport Accident Investigation Commission.

A Givealittle page for the family was set up following Askin's death and more than $300,000 has been raised as of Monday afternoon.
