Quote:"Two Japanese politician made claims predicting greater doom and gloom if Japan ends nuclear power. Japan’s defense chief claimed nuclear power provides a deterrent against a foreign attack, that they give the impression Japan could build a nuclear bomb on short notice."

"The new head of TEPCO has proclaimed they don’t have any money to invest in renewable energy as the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi and paying victim compensation are taking all their funds. TEPCO’s new chief also proclaimed he wants to restart two units at the destroyed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant"

Kawasaki city mayor, “School serves radioactive lunch for educational purpose.”

Tokyo newspaper reported Abe, the city mayor of Kawasaki stated they serve radioactive school lunch for educational purpose. “Students need to know they live in danger by consuming radioactive school lunch.”

From reading what this "leader" had to say, I now see why they built nuclear plants on earthquake faults and on the coasts. damned.gif Someone should educate him on what eating radioactive food does to one's body, but that is too much common sense.

From article:

Japan has announced plans to end its reliance on nuclear power within 30 years, in a historic policy shift prompted by the triple meltdown at the Fukushima power plant.

http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/ar...897913.ece

I hope they achieve this goal because there is no plan in place...From article:

The report does not specify how the expensive shift to renewables would be funded, or how to minimise the environmental impact of greater fossil fuel use.

...it seems the government there listens to the business community rather than the people, so for me, it's a wait and see thing.

Forgot to add

Quote:...The yogurt was processed in a filtered atmosphere in New Zealand, so it is unlikely that the cesium was picked up in processing.

Dairy products in the southern part of the southern hemisphere are now contaminated with radiation.

Security Tokyo also found 1.2 Bq/kg of cesium-137 in maple sugar from Quebec, Canada.

I did some googling since I remember the levels were way higher here. Or the legal level that is. 15.gif

This from the Swedish govt. food agency website:

"During 1986 alone 20,000 sheep were tested, of which 4,000 bodies were terminated due to surpassing radiation limit of 300 Bq/kg"

http://www.slv.se/sv/grupp1/Risker-med-m...Tjernobyl/

300 Bq/kg folks. damned.gif

And the article is called '10 years after Chernobyl'

Say it ain't so damned.gif

According to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority here in Finland, assuming it is accurate, the background radiation here between 3 and 4 pm (2 hours ago) was 0.106 µSv/h. That's normal around here.

RE: The Fukushima Disaster
That was a touching performance AK, thanks for posting it.

I found a citizen's anti-nuclear site rich with information, should anyone be interested. I linked at the haiku page which is one of my favorite creative endeavours.

http://www.cnic.jp/english/newsletter/haiku.html

Unheard voices in the unseen terror
Persecution and ostracization for Japan's afflicted
They flip the reactor switch to the 'on' position and will do it again

Oh, and by the way, the authorities in Japan are now backpeddling on their decision to phase out nuclear power by 2030.

On a personal note, my nephew who is a nuclear engineer, just secured his first job with the place that makes the CANDU reactors. When I debate the ills of nuclear power he always touts the advantages.

More haikus:

RE: The Fukushima Disaster
Quote from Greenpeace article "Japan's Radiation Monitoring Unreliable" - (Iitate hot spot):

"Decontamination efforts are seriously delayed and many hot spots that were repeatedly identified by Greenpeace are still there," Teule said. "It is especially disturbing to see that there are many hot spots around playground equipment, exposing children who are most vulnerable to radiation risks," she said. In tests carried out over four days last week, Greenpeace also found that radiation levels in Iitate village, where the government is hoping to soon return evacuated residents, are still many times over the limit, with decontamination efforts patchy. Greenpeace's Japan nuclear campaigner Kazue Suzuki said attempts to clean up were "misguided". "One home or office may be cleaned up, but it is very unlikely that the whole area will be freed of radiation risks within the next few years," given the mountainous and heavily forested nature of the region, she said. "The government continues to downplay radiation risks and give false hope (of returning home) to victims of this nuclear disaster," said Suzuki.

13.gif According to the charts, the US has 1/4 of the world's reactors, 5% of the world's population yet only manages to supply 25% of the country's energy needs.

So let me try to put this in perspective. America owns 25% of the world's breweries but only manages to provide beer to 0.2% (5/25) of the world's population.

Yes, more breweries is what you need coffeetime.gif

Surprisingly the chart is completely inaccurate.

1. Lithuania has no nuclear power.
2. France produces 78.8% of its power from Nukes.
3. The US only produces 19.6% of its power from Nukes.

The US needs 4 times as many reactors to "catch up" to France. We should have 416 reactors. We currently only have 104!!!

RE: The Fukushima Disaster
Why is this a disaster thread???

TEPCO (the Japanese power company) did an outstanding job of containing nuclear reactors that had gone uncooled for 24 hours.

The brave TEPCO employees who brought the reactors to a cold status should be praised for their courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

We should celebrate their success. They contained the radioactivity so successfully that more people were lost in the evacuation of Fukushima than would have been lost if they had stayed.
