The Future of Farming
The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with meticulously controlled light, temperature, humidity, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York high-rise, a Siberian bunker or a sprawling complex in the Saudi desert.

Advocates say this, or something like it, may be an answer to the world’s food problems.

“In order to keep a planet that’s worth living on, we have to change our methods,” says Gertjan Meeuws, of PlantLab, a private research company.

The world already is having trouble feeding itself. Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those — about 3 billion — are hungry or malnourished. Food prices, currently soaring, are buffeted by droughts, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, fertilize, harvest and transport it.

Seems like a great idea. I particularily like that they would put these buildings next to grocers, eliminates all the transport and need for preservatives.

That sounds nice, but the energy consumption would be through the roof. Trust me, grow lights require a LOT of electricity.

There is nothing wrong with growing outside as we always have. The problems are chemicals used, subsidies paying farmers to NOT grow crops and the fedgov buying up harvests just to let them rot in piles in order to artificially raise the prices. Add that to foreign tyrants refusing to distribute food to their people and the issue of starvation will never go away.

LED lights are the future Kreeper, combine them with solar panels and you have a self sustaining greenhouse.

You also eliminate the equipment needed to harvest, process, transport irrigate and fertilize produce. Takes a lot less energy to light a bulb than move a semi or a combineharvester.

Well I'll be...

JR, I saw what you wrote and did a little digging. It has been so long since I had an indoor garden that I guess I fell out of touch. I had no idea they had already developed led bulbs with the spectrum and wavelengths needed to grow. The two biggest risks when growing are telling ANYONE and your electric bill jumping. If those lights are as good as their potential, not only would you need far fewer lights, but those lights would use far less electricity! There are other issues involved with indoor growing, but as long as you are growing all organic there shouldn't be any issue at all.

This is sounding better and better as I type.

I better stop now before I start getting ideas...
