So far, six cases of the rare hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) have been confirmed – two of whom have died – while a "multiple" number of other suspected cases of the rodent-borne disease are being investigated.

Yosemite authorities closed down the "Signature Tent Cabins" earlier this week at Curry Village, a popular lodging area in Yosemite Valley – the tourist centre of the scenic park visited by millions of people every year.

The National Park Service has written to some 2,900 people who booked stays in the Boystown area tent lodgings between June 10 and August 24, alerting them to keep an eye out for symptoms of HPS.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated the number of people who actually stayed in the tent cabins – those who booked plus their guests – at 10,000.

Spreading virus on blankets is an old trick, but it just might work... damned.gif

He and eight colleagues examined five emerging and re-emerging diseases – malaria, lyme disease (spread by ticks), Hantavirus (spread by mice and rats), West Nile disease (spread by mosquitoes), and schistosomiasis (spread by freshwater snails).

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta is reporting a a record number of West Nile virus infections for 2012 in 48 states across the country.

Tourism to and immigration from endemic areas can result in schistosomiasis cases presenting anywhere in the developed world. Acute schistosomiasis among travelers may be increasing, and rates of emigration from endemic areas are rising.

I believe this climate change situation will bring forth many ills and animal extinctions.

All the ancient bacteria and viruses that have been trapped under miles of ice for millions of years. It will be just like the Spaniards landing in the Americas.

On second thought, if they are ancient then they will not have had the opportunity to mutate into antibiotic resistant beasties. What do you think?

Nothing is stopping them from mutating just like many others do. But I'm no virologist.
