Not so sure about the last one. I did that every summer from about the 5th grade on and never had any problems.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

OK...that was dark, alright.

Who the heck needs evil aliens, demons or Satan himself..?

Good old kleptocracy oligarchs quite enough, thank you.

BTW, my maternal Grandmother started out as a tobacco
girl here in town, working 12 hour shifts at very young age.
She still lived to be over 80 years old, though.

Godawful video, thx for posting.

Any time! cheers.gif

By the way, they never sprayed chemicals in the field when we were working. The chemicals were deadly though. You weren't supposed to touch them. I remember the farmer filling his tank with water and sticking his arm in to mix the chems and his arm would turn brownish yellow.

I don't know what long-term effects the chems had on him, but I hope they killed him slowly and painfully. He was a pedophile. We know he molested my sister and his granddaughters. We suspect he molested his daughter.

In the west it's better these days for kids ~ work laws and more or less better technology. Plus, the fact we rely on most of the scut work in manufacturing being done in 3rd world shitholes where child labor is still practiced as in the video.

Greed, baby, greed.

Keep in mind that these were just a few of the worst. (Although I still disagree with tobacco being on the list.) Kids were brutalized for nearly no pay. Even third world countries have better and safer machinery than we did in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

As for tobacco, nearly every kid I knew worked in it. So many, in fact, that the local school year worked around it. It was nasty. The sap from the plants had to be washed off with bleach. But it allowed me to buy my school clothes every year. It really wasn't what the video made it out to be.

Of course, after all the suits against big tobacco the demand plummeted and now most of those farmers have moved on to far less profitable crops. Where I grew up was the tobacco capitol of the world. Now there isn't much to be found there.

By the way, it is the particular chemicals and fertilizers that make tobacco carcinogenic. I've read that they contain at least three radioactive particles with a half life of 22 years.

All I know is it has been right at 16 years since I quit smoking. I don't miss it. I have never missed it. I wish they would place a total ban on smoking. But that is not likely.

Too bad it's not as harmful as devil weed marijuana...

Tobacco has big lobby money that pays representatives to take no stance on meaningful legislation and keep the status current quo of absurdity.
