A Pyramid in the Middle of Nowhere Built To Track the End of the World

İmage

A huge pyramid in the middle of nowhere tracking the end of the world on radar. An abstract geometric shape beneath the sky without a human being in sight. It could be the opening scene of an apocalyptic science fiction film, but it's just the U.S. military going about its business, building vast and other-worldly architectural structures that the civilian world only rarely sees.

The Library of Congress has an extraordinary set of images documenting the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex in Cavalier County, North Dakota, showing it in various states of construction and completion. And the photos are awesome.

Quote:Safeguard was a mid-'70s anti-ballistic missile program; it was shut down before it ever became operational. The pictured facility was the Missile Site Radar (MSR), which was complimented by a longer-range Perimeter Acquisition Radar (PAR) housed in a similar pyramid. Both featured phased-array antennas that permitted rapid beam scanning with no moving parts. One PAR is still in operation. The technology is similar to the PAVE PAWS missile warning and space surveillance radar in use today.

One location for omnidirectional tracking. It's a common design in tracking stations around the globe ~ some large, some small. Most of them are "missing" on Google Earth maps.

The purpose of that particular one was to destry an incoming nuke with a nuke ~ but that of course, would do an EMP number over wherever it burst. From what I understand, that particular facility was only operation for a few weeks and then it was mothballed.

Fascinating find Shadow. I believe the original pyramids had a purpose as well, long since forgotten.

I wonder how 'shut down' it was. You don't go to all that expense to shut it down weeks after it is completed or even as it becomes operational.
