An army group in Turkey says it has taken control of the country, with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over Ankara.

PM Binali Yildirim earlier denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", stressing it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.

Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.

There are reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.

Other reports said soldiers were inside buildings of the Turkish state broadcaster in Ankara.

Quote:Turkey’s policy in the Middle East since 2011, once described by an adviser to Mr Erdogan as “precious loneliness”, has failed to pay dividends. Instead, it has left the country exposed to IS attacks, a renewed war in its Kurdish south-east, and tensions with allies. It is no surprise that Turkey has turned more genial; it needs all the friends it can get.

This is very interesting. I will definitely be keeping an eye on developments.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

I always steer away from politics and know very little about it, but surely this idiots name has been on the news as of late, and he will pay the price for what he did?

turkey is kinda divided. the majority of people there today are "traditionalists" that are pro erdogan and quran and old values. on the other side is a huge minority of secularists (kemalists) who give a fuck about religion and want to turn turkey into a modern country - westernize it.

the military sees (or at least has seen) itself (to put it in simple words) as some sort of "atatürk police" that overthrew governments who acted in a non-kemalist fashion. they did this a couple of times in their history and always gave back the power to the people.
around 40 years ago islamists slowly undermined society. turned a secular majority into a minority over the decades.

Turkey coup: 90 dead and 1,100 wounded after attempt to overthrow Erdogan by military

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had been on holiday as the coup began, flew into Istanbul’s Ataturk airport early on Saturday and was greeted by large crowds.

He denounced the coup attempt as an “act of treason” and said the government remains in power.

Mr Erdogan warned coup supporters that “they will pay a heavy price for their treason to Turkey“, according to a transcript of his remarks provided by his office.

Turkish coup quashed, 194 reported killed in clashes

So I guess Europe is still getting extorted?
