The asteroid will pass 27,700 km (17,200 mi) from the surface of Earth.[2] The 2013 passage of 2012 DA14 by Earth is a record close approach for a known object of this size.

That's pretty close.

If it ever slowed down...... It would get caught up in Earth's sphere of influence and it could get stuck in orbit around Earth or, worse... if it slowed down A LOT, it WOULD crash in to Earth.

I wonder if this is the meteor they want to harness and put in the Moon's Orbit..... naw... too far away from the Moon.

But, the good news is.... I have never heard of a meteor or asteroid that ever "Slowed Down". They either collide with whatever is in their path or they don't.

This looks like a pretty damned close call, though....

You know..... Looking at the Moon's path in relation to the asteroid.... That WOULD be a Moon encounter where they bisect. But, again.... it would have to slow down.... WAY down.

I don't know enough about it to speculate but apparently there is some chance it could hit orbiting satellites.

I don't think it'll slow down enough to cause anything dramatic. uhoh.gif

Also heard it will be visible with binoculars in Australia. Meaning it's on the opposite side on the globe from us when it's the closest. whew.gif

Wouldn't that be something? But i'd hazard a guess it'd hit China's quite selectively.

They seem to have a pretty good handle on the trajectory, so I'm not questioning their data. It's a biggun; half a football field in size. damned.gif
