LONDON (MarketWatch) — BP PLC could be just a few months away from resuming drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico after reportedly asking to strike a deal with U.S. regulators less than a year following the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 and triggered the worst oil spill in American history.

Sea Turtle Deaths Mount in the Gulf

In the past few weeks, we've seen an increase in turtle strandings in the northern Gulf, primarily in Mississippi. The spring time is the typical time when turtle strandings in this region begin to increase, but the sharp increases in recent days are of concern to us….NOAA Fisheries is in contact with the states of MS and LA regarding current trawl and other fishery activity that can result in turtle by catch and mortality. In addition, tests will be done for biotoxins, such as those from harmful algae blooms, which are common in the Gulf. …All causes of death, including petroleum, will be investigated when possible based on decomposition. During a necropsy, the full GI tract is examined for product or evidence of oil ingestion. Additionally, samples are taken for PAH analysis. In addition, all turtles are being carefully examined for signs of external oiling.

Like the dolphin strandings this year, it’s likely that many more turtles have died and will never be found. A recent study of dolphin deaths showed the true number of mortalities is probably 50 times what is recovered.

I have nothing against the safe extraction of oil, until we obtain alternative sources of energy at competitive prices it's necessary.

I feel uncomfortable with the cut corners save one dollar and loose a million strategy the company had.

I just don't feel we need any more oil disasters in the gulf anymore than we need the radiation we're all sucking up at the moment to one degree or another. One Armageddon at a time please.

Here's a good one...

"Petrobras drops riser in deep-water Gulf"

http://fuelfix.com/blog/2011/04/04/petro...ater-gulf/

Does not say what kind of riser it was/is but at 8,000' I feel reasonably confident it had the potential of giving aquatic life 1-hell of a headache.

Quote:The well was not in production at the time, according to Melissa Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Offshore Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, so it does not appear that oil was spilled.

It may be giving the fish a headache, but at least there was no major spill, thank god. I think everyones a bit burned out on all the doom as it is.

They are going to test the turtles for oil consumption? What about the side effects of Corexit?

Kreeper that's a very good thought. Both Corexit's used is supposed to have a very short half life HOWEVER when mixed with the crude have read no specs on the stuff. Somebody needs to get a sample of that sunken contaminated crude to see what compounds still exist and their amounts. That stuff is gonna be around with us for a long time.

Read a interesting article regarding the effects of Macondo blowout will not be known for many years if ever. We are still learning environmental effects from Exxon Valdez
