Canadian Cable Company Shames Non-Paying Customers Publicly On Facebook

f you've ever been late on paying a bill, it's unlikely that you ever thought that you were running the risk of being publicly shamed about your shortcomings. However, for a few unfortunate individuals, one Canadian cable TV provider doesn't see things quite the same way. Recently, Senga Services, which is located in Canada's Northwest Territories, decided to begin posting the names of customers that had overdue payments to its Facebook page. The initiative was spearheaded by company employee Jennifer Simons, who felt so strongly about her right to expose late bill payers, that she debated with those on a Facebook community page who thought she was in the wrong in doing so. Simons claims that public shaming has proven to be the most successful method of getting customers to pay up. Exposing someone's name and amount owed might be a gross breach of ethics, but Simons claims that it's not illegal. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada urged the company to pull the post outing these tardy customers, and the company has since obliged. The Privacy Commissioner is now mulling whether this issue is worth investigating further.

Yeah, it's a good was to get your sorry ass sued, too.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

Cable companies are ruthless as fuck, in particular in areas where there is no competition.
Another damn good reason to not be on FB in any form. Times are tough, nobody gives a damn about another persons unpaid bills.
The other thing is.. who's life is so meaningless that they visit a cable companies page on FB to begin with?
If FB had a "fuck you" button I'd consider an account.

update:

'CBC News contacted the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in an attempt to determine the legality of posting the information online. In an email response, Tobi Cohen, a senior communications adviser at the office, told CBC that Senga Services had been contacted and "the company has complied with our request to take down the post."

This is a really old thread, but anyway, if they did that to me I'd upload pics of the HD Digital Antenna and the middle finger and tell them that I am elderly and just forgot to pay it, also I would add a meme of OK then buh-bye.

I've been to stores that would put all bounced checks on the wall behind the register.
