They wouldn't be building it for the sun's energy. When they do build the space elevator all they have to do is allow solar panels to be mounted on it.

The space elevator is going to be for recreation......you know people wanna go into space and they will pay.

What will they do to protect travellers on the space elevator from collisions with space debris and comets and asteroids? 13.gif

Who pays for the materials, constructing, transporting, installing and maintaining of the solar panels?

I dunno but the fact that we would be getting unlimted energy without doing anything to produce it I would think that humanity as a whole could pay for the upkeep............so lets call it cheap unlimted energy

I am starting to sound like a liberal calling things free chuckle.gif

Space elevator... seems like a really bad idea to begin with. You think the world trade centers made a good target, this is practically jihad bait. chuckle.gif

In my lifetime I expect the earth to resemble a wagon wheel with the planet in the center and the space elevators as the spokes damned.gif

Well, this is interesting but...

The best material available - carbon nanotubes - is only about 1/2 as strong as is needed.

The earth end would be about the size of your pinkie or less - not the thick cable shown.

If one of these breaks and falls to earth the results would be ugly - it would wrap around the globe 1 and 1/2 times and land with a smack.

Exactly.

Is the elevator going to be made out of diamonds, because you'd need something really strong to withstand all that weight?

Plus, it would be rotating really fast due to the earth's rotation. It's windy at the top of sky scrapers. Imagine the gale force winds for something that extended out into space as it approached the ionosphere.

Pray for me. hug.gif
