Lets apply some logic to Comet C/2012 S1

1. It's name isn't ISON - that is the soviet observatory that found it.
2. A large comet is about 20 km. Lets assume this is a large comet.
3. The comet is over 90% volatiles (water and such).
4. It is going to pass within 0.012 AU (about a million miles) of the sun.

It is over 7000 times warmer (W/m2) at closest approach than it is outside on a hot day.

By the time the comet's ass gets around the sun it is going to be cooked twelve ways to Sunday.

What would head toward us, would be a cloud of gravel that would be less than 3 kilometers in diameter if it was in one piece.

I suspect the reason no one is guessing the size is that until all the fat is cooked off (so you can tell what's left) it doesn't matter

Comets may not need to be massive stone or iron to cause significant perturbation
take for example the volatiles, they could have pathogens, and if the theory of electric universe holds, an iron object charged as this one seems to be
May have all the ingredients for a dark age episode
or it may just be a dirty snow ball and die as it dives into the inner Solarium

You should not say things like that to me WEBWAR - it makes me commit math...

We know the closest approach is 0.012 AU.

1. 0.012 squared is 6944 which is 7000 for all practical purposes.
2. The comet has an albedo of .05 or less (not relevant). Most comets are darker than road tar.
3. σ = 5.670373(21)×10−8 W m−2 K−4
4. Energy at earth orbit (1 AU) = 1365 W/m2.
5. Energy varies with the square of the distance from the sun.
5. The Stephan Boltzmann law can be used to compute the temperature.

İmage

T = (1365*7000/σ)**1/4 = 3603K

The temperature will be above the boiling point of iron. None of the expressed concerns are relevant.

My estimate of core and tail sizes based on amateur photographs supplied with Arc Second Scales
