Quote:“Submit your message to the festival, and we will transmit two of them using the radio telescope of the Algonquin Radio Observatory in Algonquin Park.”

The messages will be transmitted to two stars, named Tau Ceti and Kepler 62. Because Tau Ceti is only 12 light-years from Earth, the radio signals will reach that system in 12 years. If someone is there to receive the message and respond, we could conceivably hear a reply in the year 2037.

“This is a fun opportunity for people to think about how to construct a message that intelligent extraterrestrials might be able to understand,” says Reid (pictured right). “It’s also an opportunity to explore the technological challenges involved in actually getting a message to another star.”

I'm just curious what everyone here would want to say. I'm still thinking of my message, but I will post it once I formulate it.

Here is more information on the tentatively habitable planets in Tau Ceti (five planets) and Kepler 62 (two Earths?).

I probably NOT describe where our planet is located exactly, but rather let them know that "You are not alone". If they are sentient, intellectual, and technologically saavy to be able to decipher the message, then they will obviously figure out that we are too just by virtue of beaming a message that far in a relatively short time (11 years).

That was pretty interesting, never heard that before. I've always hoped we don't regret sending that out in space. uhoh.gif

Don't worry Jay, I heard on the radio this morning that those particular transmissions will take a million years or so to reach, what we think are habitable planets.

But the transmissions to be sent via this contest will only take 11 years to reach these two star systems. So, we start listening 22 years from September 2013 for a reply, or we get visitors 11+ years from now(?).

Ain't we impressive?
