Splenda can modify how the body handles sugar and could lead to diabetes, according to a new study.

Scientists found that consuming the sugar alternative made of sucralose caused a person's sugar levels to peak at a higher level and in turn increase the amount of insulin a person produced.

Researchers said that while they did not fully understand the implications of the findings, they might suggest that Splenda could raise the risk of diabetes.

This is because regularly elevated insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance, which is a known path to type 2 diabetes.

'Our results indicate that this artificial sweetener is not inert - it does have an effect,' said Yanina Pepino, research assistant professor of medicine at the Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis, who led the study.

All I know is that artificial sweeteners are unnatural, the body doesn't know what to do with them. I hate that when I go into a grocery store ALL the yogurt is sweetened with Splenda/sucralose and it has a weird aftertaste!

yup.gif It was starting to get that way when I left the States some 7 years ago. I noticed the brand of unsweetened yogurt I always bought suddenly tasted totally different. I was freaked out to learn they started adding Splenda. gaah.gif
Why sweeten unsweetened yogurt? Who knows what that does to the Acidophilus and bifidus probiotics imperative for gut health.

i didn't read the article but as far as i know this was believed for a long time and most physicians would recommend to avoid artificial sweetener like poison. in fact if a sweetener reaches a certain warmth for a longer period of time and you consume it it's going to destroy your nervous system.
