A seaside holiday town's plan to call a road Hitler's Walk has been scrapped after it sparked outrage.
Mevagissey council in Cornwall has abandoned the idea after it drew protests from across Britain.
The Jewish community had called on holidaymakers to boycott the town if the scheme went ahead.
Mevagissey is on the tourist trail, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists a year, and the loss of income would have been crippling.
Councillors say the road has been called Hitler's Walk unofficially by locals for decades – not in memory of Adolf Hitler, but after 'overzealous local park warden' Wright Harris who used to strut around in the 1930s.
There used to be a sign saying Hitler's Walk but it was removed in 2005 after complaints that it was inappropriate.
Recently the council requested a new one to put up but have now cancelled the order.
What were they thinking?
