Daylight saving time starts this weekend. Here’s how things would change if we got rid of it.

:snip:

There’s a good case to be made for moving the clocks forward and keeping DST year-round (as many, me included, have argued before).

I read that many European countries are considering the same move.

It's talked about here as well, it makes no sense to set the clocks back when the sun shines 2/7 coffeetime.gif

I read that many European countries are considering the same move.

It's actually Finland that has been pushing to end daylight saving time through a citizens initiative. It was brought to the EU table and they would "look at it" time.gif

Finland is to begin lobbying to abolish daylight saving time after more than 70,000 Finns signed a petition calling for it to end.

Finnish EU ministers are taking the first steps towards formally petitioning the EU to stop the usage of daylight saving time, after a petition signed by some 70,000 Finns forced MPs to consider the idea.

According to the country's EU cabinet committee, Finnish representatives will try to speed up a commission survey of member states about their positions about the practice of adjusting clocks an hour ahead or back twice a year.

The committee said they hope to soon find out how the practice affects other member states, and emphasised that EU-wide consensus on the issue is vital.

Due to an EU-wide directive on daylight saving, Finland — or any other EU member states, for that matter — cannot independently stop the practice but must move together with the other 27 EU states.

What Florida is voting for is to move from EST/EDT to AST (no daylight savings). They are not exempting themselves from Standard Time, they are voting to adopt a different standard timezone. They are voting to eliminate daylight savings time. Standard time in most of the world follows political borders not some raw calculated mean position every 60 minutes apart.

I'm going to have a martini and read that again.

I agree. Pick one and stick with it.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

All of EU should be in the same timezone.
