Some of this spyware seems to be popular with couples who don't trust each other.

http://cellspynews.com/can-i-spy-on-my-c...fes-phone/

"Then – you’re done. The software is hidden on the phone and you can start spying on all her secrets from the secure control panel that they give the details to you for when you signed up. Remember, this is your own private access. Nobody else will have any access to the data from that phone. You’ll soon have the lowdown on your wife’s cheating ways and at last be able to see the truth for what it is and be able to plan your response – on your terms!"

"Software is hidden"!

Is it a sign of the times? A sign of things to come?

actually... almost every fkn app that is inside any store - be it google.play amazon or whatever - is malware. even the apps you pay for spy on you ffs.
i mean take a look at a simple pong game and it's permissions: fkn ridiculous how many of them sniff out your wifi networks open network sockets (which basically means establishing a connection (sometimes even permanent in the background as a "service") to a server) read all your accounts contact details mails etc etc...

I do not own a "smart"phone,

but my old Nokia has got a flashlight on it, yes.

Just about the only fancy extra there is on it.

Actually, the old Nokias are in demand based on privacy concerns. I keep an old one around just in case.
Android can be secured relatively easily if you take the time to do some digging and learn how to go about it, but nothing is really 100% bullet proof.
