I don't live in Berkeley, but I was alerted to this story. According to this article ( http://www.berkeleyside.com/2015/07/08/b...-of-books/ ) books that have not been checked out during the past three years are being dumped from the library. The librarians who helped build these special collections were not consulted in this.

Because it is Berkeley, people are becoming quite vocal about the issue, and yesterday protested this policy. ( http://www.berkeleyside.com/2015/07/14/p...l-library/ )

What do you think about a library that would dump its own books?

I think it is common practice to weed out books, they continuously buy new books and if they didn't weed out some old stuff they'd outgrow their walls pretty quickly. Just yesterday when I strolled by the library they were getting rid of some books in fact. They don't "shred" them, they sell them for 50 cents to 1 euro a piece. Lot of people browsing too. They do that regularly. I've bought many books on such occasions over the years.

If you want a specific book the library doesn't have they will order it for you by borrowing it from another library. They always get you the book. At least I've not experienced anything else.

Of course these are small local libraries, I'm sure other libraries have other practices.

Throwing away history is criminal. Libraries are often the first causality of war, but the destruction of books should not be an inside job. 13.gif

I met someone who used to volunteer at a library during the summer, when they have reading programs for school age kids. They measure the books read, and kids can compete for points which can ultimately get them prizes.

On the reading list, classic books like Tom Sawyer were not included. They could only earn points by reading books on the approved list, and classics were omitted from the list.

One way or another, it seems as if libraries are being slowly removed from us, and with it, our history, our culture, and our inspiration.
