USA vs. Finland Women's Hockey: Score and Recap from 2014 Winter Olympics

İmage

If there was any question as to how important the opening game in the women's hockey tournament was for both the USA and Finland, that was quickly answered with both teams deciding not to attend the opening ceremonies to focus on the early start time of their game.

Both teams came in determined and ranked inside the top three in the world, but one was clearly the more superior group as Team USA came away with a 3-1 win.

Yeah it's a popular winter sport all over Scandinavia. It's originally Norwegian.

Ski troops played a key role in the successes of the Finnish war effort against the Soviet Union during the Winter War in 1939. Forested, rural terrain with no roads was used by Finnish ski troops with great success against the advancing mechanized Soviet troops. Most notably, in Battle of Suomussalmi, two Soviet mechanized divisions (45,000 men) were annihilated by three Finnish regiments (11,000 men).

Perhaps learning from the Finns, the Soviet Union deployed several ski battalions during World War II, notably in their 1941 counterattack in the Battle of Moscow.

Finnish Army — every soldier is trained in ski combat, and skiing is a part of standard required training for all conscripts.

Called military patrol, the combination of skiing and shooting was contested at the Olympic Winter Games in 1924, and then demonstrated in 1928, 1936, and 1948, but did not regain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules. During the mid-1950s, however, biathlon was introduced into the Soviet and Swedish winter sport circuits and was widely enjoyed by the public. This newfound popularity aided the effort of having biathlon gain entry into the Winter Olympics.

The first World Championship in biathlon was held in 1958 in Austria, and in 1960 the sport was finally included in the Olympic Games. At Albertville in 1992, women were first allowed in Olympic biathlon.

Anyhow is skiing and shooting a successful combo. I was thinking it would be even more interesting if they had moving targets like ski jumpers.
