Today a new pub opens - on the side of a motorway. Spokesman for JD Wetherspoons Edward Gershon defends the decision, but will the move result in more drink drivers?

Cold beer is available at gas stations in the US where permitted by law, just as it is here. People who are going to drink too much and drive will do it regardless of where a pub springs up.
I don't see it as a great idea, but I don't think it's the end of the world either.

I believe the responsibility to drive sober lies with the driver, not with the establishment that sells the alcohol.

A pub only accessible by car is not cool, excluding all responsible and eco-friendly drinkers.

Beer outlets here for a while had drive through pick up windows, they didn't last long, nobody bought their beer there. JR is right, drunk driving has little to do with where people buy their alcohol.

It looks like it's not just accessible by the motorway as there are other roads to get there according to one of the comments. I see the video isn't viewable for me...but I'd assume if it had other access roads one could also walk those roads to get there. Like I said...I can't see the video so don't know if there are houses close by or not. Here...there are plenty of restaurants and/or bars to drink at right at the on and off ramps to our freeways. Also here in WA state...we are allowed to buy hard liquor at grocery stores and other privately owned liquor stores now. In the past it's only been allowed for purchase at state run liquor stores. The argument against it was that the easier access of it would have more people buying it and potentially drinking it in their vehicles making for more drunk drivers. After a year and a half...statistics apparently have provin that worry wrong. Funny though that after cannabis was made legal here..it's all over the news about the increase in driving buzzed and how dangerous it is. I agree that it can be dangerous...but to say there's an increase now when they never tested or questioned people about cannabis when getting pulled over before just seems stupid. Also...the amount in your system to qualify for a driving under the influence is ludicrous. You could have smoked some at a party or home last week and still have enough of a reading for a ticket. Just to get it legalized...those in charge let the government agencies add on some real stupid rules. It's one thing to have just bonged out or smoked a fatty just now compared to 2 days ago.

Whats the difference in going to this pub or any other, its not like its a motorway service area that you come off and have to go back on to the motorway to carry on your journey, you can go on A roads, you can get to it from A roads with out getting on the motorway, Its no different to coming off at a junction and stopping at a pub just off the junction, All the fuss from people that think its like a normal service area and don't know any better.
May be they want all pubs within half mile of a motorway should be banned !!
