UNLESS they buried them to begin with.
One inch of topsoil can take up to 500 years to accumulate, I don't need any specific measurements to tell me that's over an inch. damned.gif
All the palms on the island were cut, leaving it one of the most barren places on the planet. I bet it takes closer to a thousand years to put an inch of topsoil down.

Had to post this, it's Jubaea chilensis virtually indistinguishable from the Easter island palms. As you can see they had some huge trunks. It's said they were all cut to erect the statues.
Great microcosm of what our elite are doing for profit today and no resources tomorrow.
