Europe consistently refused to hit Russia where it would hurt: its energy titans Gazprom, Rosneft And Transfneft. The reason is simple: by imposing sanctions on these core energy exporters, Europe would directly threaten the stability of its own energy imports (Russia accounts for up to 30% of German gas imports), and as winter approaches with every passing day, playing with the energy status quo would seem like economic suicide. This all appears to have changed last Friday, when as the FT reports from a leaked copy, Europe's latest sanctions round will boldly go where Europe has never dared to go before, and impose sanctions on the big three: Rosneft, Gazprom Neft and Transneft.

Well, they must have other suppliers' in mind.

Quote:European Response #1: Boost Imports From Other Sources. Europe will increase energy imports from companies like Norway’s Statoil (STO), which currently supplies 14% of the natural gas used in Europe. Statoil cannot replace all the gas coming from Russia, but it can boost production and its bottom line. STO stands to benefit the most in the near term.

They seem desperate for it. This will increase energy prices everywhere not just Europe. Perhaps they can blame the market collapse on Russia then.

Quote:TAP keen to provide cost-effective delivery of Azeri gas to Europe.

TAP's shareholders are EGL of Switzerland (42.5 percent), Norway's Statoil (42.5 percent) and E.ON Ruhrgas of Germany (15 percent).

Don't rely on Azerbaijan much, not to say at all. In Europe right now is no other alternative (OK - not so much France and west EU) than Rossia. Then come petrol. Only Norway, GB can't supply enough petrol to run EU economics. This EU puppets (bureaucrats) are really truncated plasticine sticks and Merkel have no balls.

You can become a slave only by voluntary consent.
I am highly allergic to circumcised souls and red flags with Venusian star on them.

Quote:Poland has suspended gas supplies to Ukraine in reverse flow. This was stated by the head of the company "Ukrtransgaz" Igor Prokop'ev, reports RIA "Novosti."

"Not everything is so simple. Today, Russia has begun to limit the supply of gas to the Republic of Poland to thwart reverse with Poland, we learn. At two o'clock in Poland ceased to reverse the Ukraine within the 4 million cubic meters ", - he explained the situation

Poland Says Russian Gas Deliveries Tumble By 45%; Europe To Launch Sanctions On Friday, Russia Will Retaliate

Damn.

from reuters

Quote:European leaders spoke early on Thursday and agreed to push ahead with a package of sanctions against Russia by the end of the week, due to its aggression towards Ukraine, the spokesman for British Prime Minister David Cameron said.

"This morning the prime minister took part in a joint call with several fellow European leaders; president (Herman) Van Rompuy, Chancellor (Angela) Merkel, president (Francois) Hollande and prime minister (Matteo) Renzi," the spokesman said

So far the only evidence of Russia's 'aggression towards Ukraine' I've seen is a screenshot from a popular video game.

Damn indeed. Unfortunately Finland's opinions don't weigh too heavy...

Quote:Ukrainian anger

...The issue gets widespread coverage this morning, with Ilta-Sanomat reporting a blistering condemnation by Ukraine’s former top foreign office civil servant. “I would never have imagined that Finland’s decisions are so driven by Russian money and political pressure,” Vasyl Filiptshuk fumed to the paper. “Finland has itself experienced Russian aggression in its own history and lost territory because of Russian military attacks.”

Meanwhile Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, who was yesterday revealed to have himself opposed extra sanctions during a cabinet meeting, issues a strong rebuttal to claims that Finland’s actions have sent a signal that Russia's behaviour is acceptable.

“This situation is not about trade interests. This is not about Finland’s image. This is about war and peace, and everybody should be clearly thinking about what the best way of bringing an end to this fighting is,” Tuomioja tells Ilta-Sanomat.
