Expressing awful Glands

Yeah ~ I adopted an English Bulldog once. Took him to the vets for a going over and my vet chuckled as he snapped on the exam gloves and said "Welcome to the wonderful word of expensive veterinary medicine."

Bulldogs have all sorts of idiosyncrasies, and packed awful glands are among them. The vet did it himself with no fuss for him or the dog. Just slung an arm over his butt and went to work. He used a cotton ball and expressed the glands. The dog hadn't exhibited any problems but at least I knew what to look for after that introduction.

My suggestion is: Just go easy the first time with no trauma for either of you. If one is clogged, the attempt will stir things up some and the next time or two it will get easier to empty, and both you and Mason will be more at ease (if there is such a thing) with the procedure. It's better to do them regularly, or whenever you see him scooting. licking his bum or reeking.

Two bits of advise: Don't forget the lube and make sure to kiss him when you are done.

Any way, my friend says that if the gland has impacted matter in it, then you could easily damage the gland by trying to drain it. She suggests you go to the vet for the first time, as the vet has a quick procedure to do this, and you need to know finger placement (2 and 4 o'clock...guessing) and what pressure to use. She also said she is going to buy a muzzle. So, that gives you an idea of what an ordeal this procedure can be.

Mason is showing all the signs that this needs done.

I'm kind of a DIY king when it comes to anything I can to to save a buck or two, but this is... you know... kinda' out there.

Has anyone else ever had to do this?

And, just to clarify, I do mean with your pet.

İmage

I lost a cat to a badly infected gland. It's not pleasant, but it has beats the alternative. It can turn septic or gangrenous.I still regret not noticing what was going on with her sooner. Another cat had it. I'd go into the tub with him, and do it. I got hit in the face a few times must keep your mouth shut and turn on the shower when you're done. I check all their butt holes regularly now. Yeah really.
