NEW YORK — Exxon made almost $11 billion and practically apologized for it.

Sensing public outrage over gasoline prices that have topped $4 in some states, the company struck a defensive posture Thursday after posting some of its best quarterly financial results ever.

Exxon said it had no control over high oil prices. It said it's one of the biggest taxpayers in the United States. It cast federal subsidies as "legitimate tax provisions" that keep jobs at home, and cast itself as a victim of Washington scapegoating.

Quote:Shell sparked anger last night after it announced profits of nearly £50million a day ($83.4 million) as motorists are hammered at the petrol pump.

BP announced yesterday that its profits fell 2 per cent to 5.48 billion US dollars (£3.32 billion).

No, man, not a year. THREE MONTHS! gaah.gif

Who told them they couldn't lower the price of gas at their own stations?

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

"BP announced yesterday that its profits fell 2 per cent to 5.48 billion US dollars (£3.32 billion)."

Not trying to sound like the devils advocate here but BP's profit includes billions of dollars worth of properties they sold off.

ExxonMobil is claiming the majority of their high profits is from their global chemicals division and refining not gasoline sales. However my father worked for Big Oil all his life and always maintained the pencil pushers "cook the books" and can make profits/losses appear as anything they want to. They retired him early to lower his pension after spending most his life working for them.

Another reason I dislike Big Oil contrary to beliefs... gaah.gif
