Quote:"A US judge has ordered the FBI to stop its "pervasive" use of National Security letters to snoop on phone and email records, ruling that the widespread tactic was unconstitutional."

"The order issued by US District Court Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco came as a blow to a measure heavily used by the administration of President Barack Obama in the name of battling terrorism."

"This pervasive use of nondisclosure orders, coupled with the government's failure to demonstrate that a blanket prohibition on recipients' ability to disclose the mere fact of receipt of an NSL is necessary to serve the compelling need of national security, creates too large a danger that speech is being unnecessarily restricted," Illston said in her written decision."

She gave them 90 more days to continue to snoop, and the door is open to appeal. I'm sure her ruling will be overturned in the interest of "national security" coffeetime.gif

It's an interesting debate. What's more important? Terrorists' or only the suspected terrorists' right to privacy or everyone's security? I'd say everyone's security.

coffeetime.gif We'll see. I don't however feel snooping emails and such does anything to bolster security. I would agree with what they are doing, if they can demonstrate probable cause.
To just randomly request emails costs a lot of time, money and resources.
I seriously doubt the effectiveness of going through grandma's lol cat emails.

Then again, sending terrorist emails through grandma's cat lol emails would be the smartest way.

I would agree with you, in that, they should have enough intel to know where to look and offer some proof. However, having said that, even with suspect activities that could be plausible (grandma's cat lol email, or as another example, hiding drugs in a baby carriage/diaper - who would think to look there?), I would say they should have the right to investigate - just to eliminate that suspected source.

That's my opinion, however, and it may be because I have enjoyed a sense of security (albiet some would argue there is no such thing) within my nation (Canadian) all my life and from what I'm reading and hearing from people from other countries, where they fear for their lives on a daily basis, I'm all for not tieing the hands of any intel agency.

If you send them through grandma's cat - wouldn't that make them the kopi luwak of emails?
