finland - the european country that has one of the leading educational systems in the western world - is going to drop their current learning-by-subject-system to embrace a new approach of education: learning by topics.
what they basically do is abolishing the widespread system of learning mathematics in one lesson and then having history in another. the new system is rather a mishmash of different subjects under one topic.
finland hopes that this new system which they call "phenomenon teaching" is going to prepare students much better for working life and life in general.
they want to implement this new system till 2020 nationwide.

http://www.independent.co.uk Wrote:[...]Finland is about to embark on one of the most radical education reform programmes ever undertaken by a nation state – scrapping traditional “teaching by subject” in favour of “teaching by topic”.

“This is going to be a big change in education in Finland that we’re just beginning,” said Liisa Pohjolainen, who is in charge of youth and adult education in Helsinki – the capital city at the forefront of the reform programme.

I am quite interested to see the benefit (if any) in the future. Some times change can be good and they can always tweak it later on, perhaps to accommodate cross-learning in multiple (related?) areas.

Quote:“There are schools that are teaching in the old fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginnings of the 1900s – but the needs are not the same and we need something fit for the 21st century.”

The reforms reflect growing calls in the UK – not least from the Confederation of British Industry and Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt – for education to promote character, resilience and communication skills, rather than just pushing children through “exam factories”.

No school systems were ever intended to create critical thinkers lol.

I was trying to teach my children how to add using that system, well a little different, but they just couldn't understand me, because their school was teaching them different and they resisted; the same with geometry.

So: 9 + 6

So, let's work with the 10's because it's easier to work with:

9 + 1 = 10 add one = 10

6 - 1 = 5 take one away = 5 10 + 5 = 15

8 + 7 add two = 10

7 - 2 take two away = 5 10 + 5 = 15

Not really, kids still need to know how to subtract one from six to add to nine and get 10 with a remainder of five.

Interesting. A fusion of subjects. I wonder if they recite the times table whilst playing basketball?

I can see by your coat my friend you're from the other side. Just one thing I got to know. Who won?
