Finnish Air Force steps up surveillance amid "interesting traffic" over Baltic'

“Military planes in nearby areas east and south of Finland are flying in different ways and in different directions than usually, which is why the Karelian Air Command in Rissala is more alert than usual,” says the unit’s commander, Col. Ossi Sivén. The unit is based in Rissala, part of the municipality of Siilinjärvi, north of Kuopio in eastern Finland.

Sivén’s descriptions of the military planes’ movements in areas near Finland refer to regions within a few hundred kilometres of the nation’s borders. Russia has been carrying out military exercises on the Karelian Isthmus and has been shifting its own planes around, while the United States is bringing fighter jets into Poland and the Baltic States.

"We won't be asleep"

“The Baltic Sea is part of our sphere of interest and there has been interesting traffic over it,” notes Sivén. “Nothing very surprising has happened near our borders, but as more military jets are being deployed, then one should be prepared for the fact that they can be used in a variety of ways.”

Sivén emphasises that Russia’s actions are not aimed at Finland and that there is no reason for undue concern among the public or the Air Command itself, but that "certain things must be ascertained".

"If something unusual happens then we won’t be asleep at the switch at that point. Rather we’ll be ready to guard this airspace, which is our main duty."

(Reuters) - Russia's military started large-scale aviation exercises in western regions on Wednesday, Interfax news agency quoted a defence official as saying on Wednesday.

The flight corridor in the Gulf of Finland is incredibly narrow, the Russians violate Finnish airspace regularly. I don't see this being a good situation at all. Keep your shenanigans away from our yard you bastards.

Obama rules out US military involvement in Ukraine

Quote:We are not going to be getting into a military excursion in Ukraine," Obama told San Diego’s KNSD TV.

"There is a better path, but I think even the Ukrainians would acknowledge that for us to engage Russia militarily would not be appropriate and would not be good for Ukraine either.”

Then why the military build up? What ff have they got planned?

I'm not worried about Russia invading, I'm more worried about the US being in the neighborhood. 13.gif

I really don't see Russia invading Finland, or any other EU country, however, if per chance worst case scenario plays out it will do so in the context of WW III and location doesn't mean a whole lot at that juncture.

no not invasion..putin now controls the energy ..natural gas..that powers Europe and if that gets cut off every country will suffer financially ..hard times ahead for Europe..there are plenty of other markets for the natural gas and oil..and putin knows this..so the ante will be upped again and what happens then???

Former General: "They wouldn’t dare come here"

During the discussion, which touched upon the political and security issues around recent events in Crimea, General Hägglund said that he doesn't believe that Finland has reason to worry.

"They wouldn’t dare come here. They know that they'd get a bloody nose. We stand by our historic achievements. We have a different background than Eastern European countries that were conquered and occupied," Hägglund stated. "This is a tough nut to crack, this Finland."
