I didn't know Finnish babies slept in cardboard boxes. blink.gif chuckle.gif

All joking aside, I think this 'starter' kit is a great idea and the Finnish gov't seems to go the extra mile.

Quote:Contents of the box

Mattress, mattress cover, undersheet, duvet cover, blanket, sleeping bag/quilt
Box itself doubles as a crib
Snowsuit, hat, insulated mittens and booties
Light hooded suit and knitted overalls
Socks and mittens, knitted hat and balaclava
Bodysuits, romper suits and leggings in unisex colours and patterns
Hooded bath towel, nail scissors, hairbrush, toothbrush, bath thermometer, nappy cream, wash cloth
Cloth nappy set and muslin squares
Picture book and teething toy
Bra pads, condoms

What is the Finnish gov't trying to say by including condoms?

Quote:"There was a recent report saying that Finnish mums are the happiest in the world, and the box was one thing that came to my mind. We are very well taken care of, even now when some public services have been cut down a little," she says.

Could it be because women are very fertile shortly after they have had a baby?

Dunno about their thoughts on condoms, but otherwise this is a great box! Most expecting mothers look very much forward to having this sent to them. Very few choose the cash alternative. And it's all really high quality stuff, made in Finland. I don't know of anybody who had their baby sleep in their box, but it's absolutely doable. The box itself is very sturdy and probably outlasts many ikea cribs.

Actually, if a new mother is breast feeding she is at her least fertile.

There must be many that have the baby sleep in the box because they are attributing that to low mortality rates in the article.

I have to ask my mom how common it was to use the box as a bed. I have to admit in a drafty house in the winter the box was probably a really good alternative. But as lowering the mortality rates, I think it was more because of this:

Quote:"Not only was it offered to all mothers-to-be but new legislation meant in order to get the grant, or maternity box, they had to visit a doctor or municipal pre-natal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy," says Heidi Liesivesi, who works at Kela - the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.

So the box provided mothers with what they needed to look after their baby, but it also helped steer pregnant women into the arms of the doctors and nurses of Finland's nascent welfare state.

Yes, Octo that seems to be a more reasonable explanation. Actually, it's a very well thought out kit...if a woman is breast feeding they included breast pads, if not...condoms.

Actually, if a new mother is breast feeding she is at her least fertile.

Actually this is very controversial. Doctors think they know the biochemistry of fertility say rarely. BUT the anecdotal information says HELL YES. The is quite common when it comes to women's issues. (by the way, if you think you can't get pregnant on your period you would be wrong)

Here is a site with comments of REAL women and their experiences:

Question:
Is It possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding?
Ive been spotting lightly for 4 days off and on

Answer 1
Yes, it is possible! Sometimes breastfeeding can prevent pregnancy, but it isn't 100%.

Answer 2
When my daughter was 3 months i got a lollipop in the wraper again. i was boobie feeding my baby so yes.

Answer 3
Yes, I'm not sure why anyone still uses this method. Depending on how long it has been sense giving birth you may just be irregular, it takes a while for everything to go back to normal.

Answer 4
it is very possible. My mom had my older brother in january and they had told her that while she was breastfeeding she couldnt get pregnant and she ended up having 2 kids in one year! my other brother (the middle child) was born in december.

Answer 5
YES ....!!! I THINK IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW FERTIL U ARE BUT YES IT IS SURELY POSSIBLE..!!

Answer 6
Oh gosh YES it's possible!! My eldest 2 are proof of that one!

I guess the theory of not being able to get pregnant while breastfeeding is because normally the baby is on mom so much that dad doesn't have time to do the deed to get mom pregnant again ...

Answer 7
absolutely. 5 weeks after my first was born i got pregnant again. so be very intentional.

Answer 8
honestly, i have never heard of this. not getting pregnant while breastfeeding? i don't understand why anyone ever thought that breastfeeding could be a possible birth control meathod. wow, akinabud, you were pregnant just 5 weeks later? you certainly didn't waste anytime getting busy again! lol. i wasn't able to have sex comfortably until atleast 3 months postpartum. yes, i made my husband wait that long. he was so frustrated, but i just kept reminding him that i was the one to push a kid out of that tiny hole, and ended up with 15 stitches. he just stood by the bed holding my hand, and boo-hooed the whole time.

Answer 9
@pinkpaisley8709 ... I was prego too before my 6 week checkup ... i believed that old wives tale of breastfeeding is birthcontrol ... like i said in my comment above, i guess the theory of it is that the baby is there so much that dad doesn't have enough time to do the deed ... boy oh boy was i wrong with that one!

Answer 10
absolutely yes both my mother-in-law and my birthig coach got pregnant while breastfeeding

Answer #5 is most likely the correct answer.

Usually the advice is to abstain for 6 weeks after child birth. That's plenty of time for a woman's system to reboot.

That's not all! Getting your tubes tied is not 100% as well. MY wife spoke to a 50 year old woman, while in the waiting room, of her OBGYN's office that was pregnant. She had gotten her tubes tied 10 years earlier by my wife's OBGYN, as did my wife.

wave.gif Wayne. That's the information I was reading when I started bearing children and it's suppose to be understood as a 'more than likely' rather than a 'the odd woman out'.
