ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The teenage outdoor education students, having progressed to the point of being on their own in the vast Alaska wilderness, were lined up single file for a river crossing when the grizzly burst with fury into the front of the line, badly mauling two in the group and injuring two more.

Those in the front screamed of the bear's presence. The bear was with her cub when she attacked, according to state troopers.

The teens were in a group of seven participating in a 30-day backcountry course conducted by the National Outdoor Leadership School when the attack occurred Saturday night in the Talkeetna Mountains north of Anchorage. They were rescued early Sunday after activating their emergency locator beacon and tending to their most seriously wounded.

What kind of dumbass would let these kids loose in grizzly country without any defenses? gaah.gif

It is the over reliance on technology, that people think will save them.

after activating their emergency locator

This device allows idiots to think they can enter the wild and be saved from any dangerous scenario. Teenagers "a modern marketing invention" these people should be smart enough to know what they're getting themselves into.

And Disney teaching kids bears are lovable cuddly pets. Jeez, for this to happen in Alaska where bears are everywhere and everybody has 15 guns.

I hope whoever was in charge of this 'adventure survival training' is charged the full service of the rescue operation. Hopefully will make the them think twice, before planning such a trip. Any course that includes survival in its title, should not include emergency locater devices.

FFS! gaah.gif There are ways to avoid this. The students should have been told to be loud, whistle, sing, or bang stones together in their hands. Give the bears advanced warning and there will normally be no problems, however with Grizzles.....
they can be a bit over the top when it comes to their young.
They should have had at least two shotguns in the party just in case.
Bet they don't do that shït again! damned.gif

Some government employee, I'm sure.

Some survival skills they learned. One buy turned to run...

and the bear ran him down and bit his chest. The one bite punctured his lung and crushed several of his ribs. Other kids ran up and started kicking the bear and it left.

It seems to me the FIRST thing they would have taught the budding survuvalists is that you NEVER RUN FROM A WILD ANIMAL!

Wanna bet that at least one of the victims will become a bear activist?

For future reference, any time you go hiking in the wilderness, make sure you sing Ted Nugent songs out loud. It'll scare the hell out of any wildlife and they will run for their lives. You bet your ass they know who Uncld Ted is...
