The Harvest Moon will float just above the planet Uranus in the sky this weekend, and skywatchers can get a great look at the celestial show without even going outside

We noticed it was full tonight. Beautiful. I recall in Indiana the moon looked orange and huge this time of year.

I actually saw my first blue moon the other week. I was riding with my daughter in the car and I said to her "the moon looks strange - why is it so dark?". Then later I heard on the news it was a blue moon. I probably saw one before but didn't acknowledge the subtle difference.

So, depending upon your time zone, your calendar might list the September 2012 full moon on September 29 or 30. But the moon will appear round and full on all the nights around this full moon.

There’s also a name for the next full moon after the Harvest Moon. It’s called the Hunter’s Moon, and it’ll come this year on October 29.

... for example, in the northern states, Canada or Alaska – the Harvest Moon will continue to shine from dusk until dawn into early October. This procession of moonlit nights is what characterizes the Harvest Moon.

How it got it's name, you ask?

In the days before tractor lights, the lamp of the Harvest Moon helped farmers to gather their crops, despite the diminishing daylight hours. As the sun’s light faded in the west, the moon would soon rise in the east to illuminate the fields throughout the night.

The Harvest moon is a legend in Norse mythology, it is said to be the most powerful of the Moons granting Loki's blessing for a strong harvest and plenty.

In other words, the moon rises approximately 30 minutes later, from one night to the next, as seen from about 40 degrees N. or S. latitude, for several evenings around the full Hunter's or Harvest Moons. Thus there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise around the time following these full moons.

The moon was pretty damned bright last night. Cloudy today though. Oh well, we won't be harvesting tonight. 13.gif
