"April 25, 2006 (by Jeff Hollenbeck) - A pilot was trapped in an F-22 cockpit for five hours on April 10th after the canopy failed to open. Several attempts to open the canopy failed, and ultimately the canopy was cut by fire department personnel."

$182,000 to replace the canopy.

That was probably not so cool. He should have tried the eject button.

They don't build em like they use to, I guess.

Quote:Still, the F-22 has been plagued with a string of incidents of pilots experiencing hypoxia symptoms dating back several years. An Associated Press investigation revealed Air Force officials were aware of flaws as early as 2005.

They do have zero/zero ejection seats. However ejecting actually shortens your back a little and is not pleasant.

There is another ugly possibility. The canopy wouldn't open - if it didn't open during the ejection cycle... The canopy is over 1/2 inch thick and may be bulletproof. Saw this in Top Gun...

Successful ejection would require a rebuild of the cockpit, new canopy, etc. Very pricey way to exit a plane.

Here is another picture of our friend in no immediate danger.

From what I can tell after 5 hours they cut him out so he could take a bathroom break.
