Quote:What you’re looking at is the surface of the comet 67p/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which is orbited by the European Space Agency’s Rosetta probe. The photo comes from Rosetta’s OSIRIS, or Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System. The raw data was collected on June 1, 2016, and posted publicly on March 22 of this year.

Twitter user landru79 processed the gif from this data release and shared it yesterday.

I found this really cool and wanted to share with everybody.

Very nice find but Firefox won't play it unless I go to twitter, it must be since they disabled autoplay.

Yeah it's very cool and actually 25 minutes worth of images.

Here's a version with the stars in the background frozen.

I wonder what that bright light at the beginning is. Reflection off of the ice?

Yeah.. sun rising over the hill? Actually that's a damn good question, makes me want to tweet the guy and ask if he knows.

Well it's a high-tech radiation camera apparently so I don't think there's any cosmic sunset to ride into here: Here are the individual pictures (with the light):

I bet the camera on the satellite turns and was picking up one of the mounted lights.
