Helmet fines jeopardize Halifax man's car insurance

Quote:A 25-year-old Halifax man says he found out the hard way that skateboarding without a helmet can also affect car insurance.

Pat Harland got a call from his auto insurance company — TD Insurance Meloche Monnex — on Thursday. He thought he was going to get a break on his insurance because he hasn't had a claim in his five years with the company.

Instead, TD Insurance Meloche Monnex told Harland they're dropping him as a client.

"I got these tickets because I was skateboarding at the Commons in the designated skateboarding area without a helmet," he told CBC News on Thursday.

In the past three years, Harland has gotten two tickets for not wearing a helmet during skateboarding. He also got a third ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

A representative with TD Insurance Meloche Monnex told Harland it was the skateboarding that had tipped his case over the edge.

"Any type of violation that goes against the Motor Vehicle Act does take points off of your licence and thus counts against your insurance rating," Harland was told.

"If it affects your motor vehicle report, it does affect your overall insurance as well."

I wouldn't be too hard on the insurance company.

5 tickets in 2 years for things normal people don't get a ticket for?

The police give warnings for these offenses normally. So the police must be familiar with him. This guy is something of a ass and an idiot that doesn't listen.

Is there really a law on wearing helmets while skateboarding? Is that the case in the US as well? I don't think I've seen a skateboarder with a helmet around here ever.

2 tickets for skateboarding and 3 tickets for no seat belts in three years?

Let's review the bidding. I haven't worn a seat belt much since they passed a compulsory seat belt law (I always wore one before). I have never gotten a ticket for seat belts. A policeman did pull me over once and explain that I was a bad boy. It has been over a decade.

To get three tickets for no seat belts in three years this guy has to be a certifiable jackass.

So if you jaywalk they can drop your insurance? Nuts.

In BC bicycle helmets are law but skateboarding, rollerblading etc are voluntary.

Sure sounds odd. The cops must be keeping an extra eye on him it seems. I always wear a seat belt in a car, even in the back seat. It's a cheap life insurance.

Bike helmets are recommended but it's not law. A bike helmet saved my son when he was a kid and hit a car with his bike. He wasn't injured, the helmet took the impact and the insurance company wanted to keep it for educational purposes.

This is what you get fined for in Finland coffeetime.gif

Police issue fines for public urination and icy windshields

Police in Lapland have issued a warning that urinating in public will be penalised.

Three men received fines for public urination in the streets of central Rovaniemi in the early hours of Friday morning. The men were each fined 20 euros for their indiscretion.

I doubt it will affect their car insurance.

Well... pissing in public streets is sorta ewwwww. And dirty. There's a brake check on a hill here for big trucks where they stop and make sure their brakes are good. So many truckers pissed there you could smell it driving by. They put a porta potty there for them.
