To track you.
I saw news that Google covertly tracks locations of people who use Android phones. It uses signal strength triangulation at cell towers. A local police department recently asked Google to provide data on everyone in an 11 acre area.

Quote:Facebook said Wednesday that it believes most of its users who had a specific search function enabled have had their profile data scraped by third parties.
"We've seen some scraping," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a call with reporters. "I would assume if you had that setting turned on that someone at some point has access to your public information in some way," he said.
The setting Zuckerberg referred to is one where users let other users search for them by e-mail address or phone number instead of by name.

I can't imagine why people don't automatically think this is going on. The only time I'm not being monitored by someone is when I'm not on the computer and the battery is dead in the cellphone.

Cambridge Analytica May Have Had Facebook Data From 87 Million People
Cambridge Analytica may have had data from more unwitting Facebook users than originally thought. From a report:
Facebook now says that the data firm, which collected data about users without their permission, may have collected data on as many as 87 million people. Original reports from the New York Times pegged that number at closer to 50 million people. "In total, we believe the Facebook information of up to 87 million people -- mostly in the U.S." may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica by apps that they or their friends used," Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer wrote in a blog post Wednesday.
From Facebook's blog post, "Given the scale and sophistication of the activity we've seen, we believe most people on Facebook could have had their public profile scraped in this way. "
