It will amaze me if nothing bad comes out of this.

Wait, wait, wait...
6 kilometers plus 4 more for the ocean? To reach the mantle? On what fucking planet? Not earth. The earth's crust is nearly 34 k thick. 6 k will not even be as deep as the Russians went (12 k ). Even including the ocean they are only going 10 k. I call bull shit on this story.

What politics from both sides wants to teach us is that things are never complex. If you have your little package and something doesn't fit into that package, You don't know what to make of it so you want to dismiss it or then you will have to do the work of reconsidering your assumptions. - Michael Malice

I wouldn't worry about it. They aren't even going 1/6 of the way through the crust. Last I heard, we don't have the ability to drill any further than the Russians did because the heat and pressure bind the drill and stop it from turning.

I was wondering about that too and had to browse:
The trench is not the part of the seafloor closest to the center of the Earth. This is because the Earth is not a perfect sphere; its radius is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) less at the poles than at the equator.[5] As a result, parts of the Arctic Ocean seabed are at least 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) closer to the Earth's center than the Challenger Deep seafloor.

I'm with you, it's a dangerous thing to do.
