Polar night begins in Nuorgam

Polar night – in Finnish "kaamos" – refers to the dark period when the sun does not rise above the horizon. The full phenomenon occurs within the bounds of the Earth's polar circles, yet more southern cities will also experience barely a glimmer during coming months.

Lapland’s polar night is starting this week, with Nuorgam the first town in Finland to experience the darkness. The sun went down on the town on Tuesday, and will not rise again until 17 January.

The town is located on the Norwegian border, and is the northernmost point of Finland, and therefore also the northernmost part of the European Union.

It's also cloudy all the time tissueguy.gif

That would get depressing. Do you have a sun lamp?

No we don't have a sun lamp 13.gif It doesn't actually bother me too much, especially when we have snow, but this constant overcast sure makes it freakin dark and dreary bored.gif We still have over 5 hours of daylight so it's not that horrible, but decreasing by 6 minutes a day until solstice. sad2.gif

Sunrise today at 9:23. Sunset today at 15:10. Length of day is 5 h 47 min.

Why don't Finns invest in big mirrors and point them at this tiny rock called Malta?, we will give you sunshine for free.

No real day for the last 10 days or so.
Gloomy grey dawn turns to gloomy grey dusk,
skipping the middle part.

Got its very own beauty to it (outside town),
but I sure would need a bit of sunshine on my face.

I think feeling extra tired or wanting to hunker down during Winter is a sign of some sort of hibernation going on.

Quote:It would appear that while humans have some of the tools for hibernation, we have not evolved them to be used for long periods of time because we have not been required to. Perhaps if we were at the mercy of the elements, we would have evolved to be able to hibernate, to be able to lower our body temperatures and severely reduce the amount of energy we use and where such energy comes from. It seems, however, unlikely that we will ever have the need to hibernate in the future, considering our wealth of indoor heating systems and warehouses full of winter coats. For now we’ll have to settle for bundling up, hunkering down, and waiting out the winter fully conscious, and, sadly, awake.

What can I say...I love my country,
holy ground of my ancestors,

but I'm no great fan of its winters.

Wouldn't mind sleeping until late
February/early March. (Full moon
of March is seed-sowing time... :) )
