After reading the state geology report on that region in general, and looking at the nearby (about 3 miles away) well blow out and some local news:

1. The subsurface (1 mile down) area has periodic faults. These faults isolate the subsurface area into zones.
2. The coast is sinking, the near coast is static, the inland area is rising due to isostatic pressure.
3. The geology has resulted in isolated pockets of gas and oil almost everywhere.
4. The crust movement (see 1) causes microquakes on pretty much a daily basis. The record is around Richter 4 so these are on average very tiny and unnoticeable. They have always been there and always will.
5. The oil and gas seeps to the surface naturally, always has always will.
6. The microquakes predate the drilling and fracking and will happen after the drilling and fracking have stopped.

The oil and gas drilling doesn't cause subsistence. The salt dome mining usually doesn't create problems.

1. There is natural petroleum on the surface of the sinkhole. They analysed it. It isn't diesel (they initially reported it as such from a test for hydrocarbons). It is natural oil. The source isn't known but is probably from underground nearby - NOT from storage in the salt dome.
2. The salt dome cavern contained NORM which is much less radioactive than the depleted uranium used for ammunition and is not a concern.
3. The original cavern is at least 1300 ft more full that it should be so the consensus is that it has falled.
4. The original cavern (pre NORM) was up to 140 million cubic feet. The surface hole will somewhat smaller than a 1200 ft wide by 400 ft deep inverted cone. The current sinkhole looks like a car funnel with a conic top and a deep center. The hole will eventually be about 800 ft. in diameter because the current hole is too deep for its width (there is a hole in the center of the hole that has to fill up.)
5. This is a bayou - bayou is another word for swamp.

The nearby oil well blowout was unrelated, occurred in a sugarcane field, was between LA 1 and LA 996 on Route 70, went on for 3 weeks, and they burned the area to get rid of the oil (at least 20 areas is covered in ash). It was due to a BOP failure.

"The solid salt dome is a 1-by-3-mile salt deposit formed from the evaporation of ancient seas in areas now covered by thousands of feet of sediment. The sinkhole’s emergence prompted an evacuation order of 150 homes Aug. 3 that remains in place.

Enough earth flowed into the formerly plugged and abandoned cavern to squeeze the brine inside the cavern and raise its pressure so that a “frack out” of the cavern occurred, extending to the surface...

The sinkhole is a brine-filled geological feature about 550,000 cubic yards in size. The failed cavern in the salt dome has about three-fourths of its volume filled with 3.3 million cubic yards of material, according to the latest estimate from Shaw."

Other than the size of the cavern the article is correct. My estimate of the cavern size was 140 million cu. ft. or 5.1 million cu. yd. So the size of the cavern should be 5.5 million cubic yards, not 550,000 cubic yards.

And 3.3 million yards of material would fill it 3/5ths not 3/4ths.

The seismic survey (they put down geophones and thump the earth with machines or dynamite) will tell them the topology of the ground. Since the dust (or in this case the sinkhole) has pretty much settled this is a good time to do it.

They are saying there may be a second collapse in that area.

Did a quick google for 'mandatory evacuations Bayor Corne' seems there's been one since early August, but nothing recent except this Brocovich vid.
