So many people say the word like so often i have to wonder why?

I even notice myself saying the word like more than i realize and i dont know why?

Is the word contagious or something?

Does it absorb itself into our brains?

Maybe it start with the valley girls of san fernando valley in california during the early 1980s?

And then very slowly spread around the world?

For one example of many...

Theres a girl i work with and this is her talking, like all the time...

"Like i went to the store and i like bought these awesome jeans and they were like so nice and like they fit like so perfectly like i couldnt believe it"

Like like like like like like...Like wtf!? (*-*)

The word like makes what you say almost like you did it, just like the -oid in humanoid.

Oh man I don't know, seems like maybe disintegration of language? dunno.gif

The girl i mentioned above i've worked with for years and i never heard her speak a sentence without her saying the word like three or four times and often even more than that...

Actually,i dont think shes capable of talking at all without saying the word like over and over again...

Most people i hear and talk to say the word like again and again...

Seriously,why the word like?

Theres hundreds of thousands of other words, but its mostly like...

Like all the time (*-*)

Disintegration of language...hmmm?...very interesting...

Like our language falls apart along with everything else thats also falling apart...

When i listen and hear so many people saying the word like over and over,it almost sounds too similar to a cd or a vinyl lp record thats defective and keeps skipping again and again...

Theres a girl i work with and this is her talking,um all the time...
"Um i went to the store and i um bought these awesome jeans and they were um so nice and um they fit um so perfectly um i couldnt believe it"
um um um um um um...Um wtf!? (*-*)

From what I can tell "like" is a better choice than "dislike" and a better choice than "um".

The second edition of the 20 volume oxford english dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use and 47,156 obsolete words and around 9,500 derivative words included as subentries...

The average person only uses around 40,000 different words when they talk and some people use many more words and some people use many less words, depending on how smart or stupid they are...

But its the word "like" that wins hands down for being the word thats said before and during and after every sentence that's spoken by most people...

I've also noticed that younger people, say ages 13 to 25,are the ones who say like the most and they say it like more than like a lot, like they say it like all the time...

I can imagine what i would hear listening to hundreds of teenagers walking up and down the hallways of high schools these days...

"Like i saw him and then he like went over to her and like i couldnt like believe it like they started like talking and now they're like going out like tonight"...

Like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like...Like wtf!?

It definitely started with the Valley Girls. The funny part is that most people heted them and mocked them by mimicking them. Next thing you know it became a habit to say it like every time you could.

Exactly, that's more or less what i was getting at in a previous post above, that someone saying like, like everyother word, sounds too similar to a cd or a vinly lp record thats defective and keeps skipping again and again...

Like you wont believe like how many times i like hear the word like while listening to people like talk because they like they say like like all the time so like do you know like what i mean (*-*)

Omg! nooooooo!,the entire country of america and maybe even the whole world has transformed into valley girls, thanx to hollywood? but hey,i always admired those val girls when i was younger and i guess i still like them now, like so like whatever they're so like totally tubular and so like the mystery is like solved...

Why are southern californians always such trend setters? because our bible belted ancestor pilgrims remained on the east coast, knitting sweaters with mommy, too afraid to join the brave trail blazing pioneers who crossed the wide wilderness and settled into california? think about it,thats probably exactly why...
