Quote:Tiny amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products detected in the drinking water of the nation's biggest city continue to pose no public health risks to residents, environmental officials said Friday.

...and from the same article:

Quote:Human health risks from trace pharmaceuticals are unclear, and the federal government does not regulate their levels in drinking water.

Damn gov can't even get the basics correct.

I'm curious to the contamination ~ the reservoirs that supply the city are the only source of drinking water ~ they are pristine and heavily patrolled up in the Catskills. The tumbling action down to sea level purifies it. The aqueducts are getting old and in need of repair/replacement (iirc, they are working on that) but I can't imagine how even trace amounts of drugs & other stuff could enter the stream.

BTSOOM.

They don't use water treatment plants in NYC, Daj?

I have not heard about pharmaceuticals in drinking water. I knew they were being found in rivers and oceans from sewage runoff, but the drinking water? How does that happen?

NYC Water is treated, by the NYCDEP. On Long Island it is treated by municipal water districts.

That last I knew, that no, absolutely NO purification is necessary for the city water supply ~ that may have changed in recent years, I do not keep up with it ~ but I am from the Catskills and my family is still there and more or less keep peripherally abreast on the latest crap from the NYC regs for the area. My sis's home abutts a tributary to the Delaware, which feeds the Cannonsville Reservoir ~ and they are damned ass serious about wtf you can put even in a creek ~ NOTHING.

To wit: There was a flood in the 90's and again a few years ago ~ and it was made worse because the City would not let them dredge the creeks through town. The governor told the City to fuk off and they dredged after near complete ruination of several small towns ~ the creeks running through my sis's town had built up 30-40 fukkin feet ~ she says now, it will not flood for the rest of her life time. chuckle.gif

NYC EDIT:: (has always had) USED to HAVE the best tasting water compared to other big cities around the globe because it needed no chlorination.

Thanks for the update. It didn't used to be ~ but with the aging aqueducts, it was bound to happen. That is prolly the SOURCE of the contamination. Figgers.

Is LI supplied by the City reservoirs or do they have wells?

dunno.gif Something is amiss. These aquifers should not have even a trace of big pharma in them. I cant even speculate as to wtf is going on.
It would take a few years and funding to determine where the chemicals were actually entering the water, but my guess is sanitary sewer mingling with fresh H2o. 13.gif
