Frederick Douglass once said, "Power concedes nothing without a demand."

The grandfather of protest -- or riots, depending on your perspective -- Gandhi deeply deplored violence. But Gandhi also said, "It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

Quote:Well free speech does have its limits as I found out as the cops shoved their bicycles into the crowd and simultaneously pepper sprayed the so captured protesters. If it had not been for my Hero (Iraq Vet Caleb) I would have been down on the ground and trampled. This is what democracy looks like. It certainly left an impression on the people who rode the No. 1 bus home with me.

In the women’s movement there were signs which said: “Screw us and we multiply.”"

Perhaps Octo, on more insignificant pocketed issues, but for the real big changes that would change everyone's life/situation drastically...have you experienced this to be true?

Kudos to her! hi5.gif I don't see eye to eye with her politically on all issues ( I seldom do anyone but I certainly respect and appreciate the differences ) but I think change through non violent means is one of the most positive things in the world, and demonstrates that there is still hope.

I think the most drastic change that can happen is within each and everyone. But I have seen radical change in my life that didn't seem to come from within, more like the universe is pulling the rug from under your feet. emo-daj.gif Not in a bad way though, just enough to think there's something out there looking out for my best.

Yes, Octo, metaphysically speaking, there may be a breaking point in universal collective consciousness where required change happens naturally, or if we fail to heed and act, then violence erupts in its stead.

You are right Octo, in that, nonviolent protest has many significant gains (by Greenpeace), but it does seem that the protesters may be nonviolent but the reaction from those unwilling to give up power/money is almost always violent, which then creates a battleground.

Quote:Our use of confrontational but peaceful protest tactics have led to new and unprecedented protections for the natural world. Of course along the way they have also made Greenpeace some enemies. In 1985, perhaps the most tragic episode in Greenpeace history occurred when French operatives bombed the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior while it was in port in New Zealand, taking the life of the photographer onboard.

The people on top will never give up their power voluntarily. I would like to start a new society from scratch, that's why I need a kritter island.

Quote:Occupy Television's goal is to circumvent mainstream media, with its multitude of conflicts of interests, in order to break out of the echo chambers of conventional political discussion. The station is based on the work of Occupy community members and citizen journalists -- it is TV for the 99%.

The channel will air documentaries including Internet's Own Boy about the death of Aaron Swartz; Occupy Love; Pots, Pans and other Solutions, about the Icelandic pots and pans rebellion; TPB AFK about copyright laws. It will also transmit radio talk shows such as Politics Done Right, Occupy Radio, Acronym TV, and Occupy Toronto.

Wow, MSM is about to get real.

I think the internet is forcing this. People are maybe waking up to the lies the MSM is responsible for.

I hope so Shadow, but I also wonder if Occupy has their own 'unbiased' slant on things? That remains to be seen.

As well, I hope the documentaries and news aren't filled with interviews containing 'no comment' from the targetted polluter, or the multi-million dollar salaried CEO's running away from confrontation. Then I might be forced to make bets on which CEO is the fastest sprinter. lol.gif
