He didn't release any tapes. He waived attorney client privilege. These tapes were confiscated by the FBI from Cohen's office. The thing is that if there were any crimes then there wouldn't be any ACP. The only thing that might be seen as illegal would be a civil matter and that is if they plotted with the Enquirer to trick her into believing they would publish her story for sole rights and then not publish them to keep it quiet. Again, that is a civil matter and not a criminal matter.
All I can see that he did wrong was have sex with a Playboy Playmate and a porn star.
Wanting it to not get spread around is understandable.
