A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.

Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.

Put up an identical map on the Internet.

Put little dots with the names and addresses of the Journal employees - especially all the management staff. Include the addresses of their second homes.

State clearly that the map is service to gun owners who may feel they have been unfairly targeted.

Wait patiently to see how long the Journal map stays up.

Still, it's waay bizarre that the paper chose to publish the names and addresses of registered firearm owners. 100 million legal gun owners killed nobody today.

There is a large pro-government cadre that seems almost pathologically driven to reduce the freedoms of their fellow Americans and to harass them into compliance.

We need to take a page from Obama's (one of the cadre proponents) playbook and as he so aptly put it: "...punch back twice as hard".

I think it would be nice to publish the names and addresses of these elitist scum who are ruining life for those around them. Pass the list around like candy to some of these random shooters and see how quickly things get better. Only mentioning..

If someone had the addresses (and used google maps to get the GPS coordinates) it isn't hard to integrate the data with either google maps or the open source equivalent using either actual tiled maps or a simple jpeg. You just need a couple of known coordinates to size and align the map, dump in the data and you are good to go.

The only caveat is you would need rights (or someone with rights) to install the map engine.

Voila, you have now mapped dangerous press people instead of dangerous gun owners.

In theory you could build up a shockwave flash (.swf) file with the same information. Shockwave files have all kinds of pieces including graphics and java so it would be possible to do an interactive map but more time consuming. The Java program would have to dynamically create the buttons and respond to the buttons. It shouldn't be to hard to write a routine to self align the buttons (for the home locations) on the map... Actually looks feasible. Would only have to dump a data file into the SWF, and add a JPEG or PNG map image with two matched GPS/Pixel points. The names and addresses would be "tool tip text" that shows up when you hover over the button (dot) at a given location.

A private citizen has the same publishing rights as the newspaper.

Now, if the newspaper's right to publish private addresses is upheld - it's game on - and the newspaper appears to imply that since the information is from public sources it is publishable. All of the addresses of Gannett/Journal staff are available on-line from public sources so it appears that their staff meets the same standard.

So, if someone asked me for an interactive SWF file based map that acts just like the newspaper's but features their staff - I might just oblige them.

Anti-Gun Newspaper Hires Armed Guards

displaying their own grand level of hypocrisy, The Journal News has hired ARMED security guards to protect them from the possible wrath of the angry populace they put at risk:

Is the staff of the newspaper in danger? Well…yes, of course they are! That kind of blind idiocy and hubris tends to attract wild fury in response. However, the point remains; when faced with conceivable violence, they turned to the practical solution of armed intervention, just like ANYONE with any sense would. They admonish us for wanting the right to defend ourselves in the most efficient way available (private firearms ownership) while at the same time surrounding themselves with a shield of guns.

The Journal News has put a weapon in the hands of criminals far more than knowing who's helpless and who has weapons.
