Echo, NASA's first communications satellite, was a passive spacecraft based on a balloon design created by an engineer at NASA's Langley Research Center. Made of Mylar, the satellite measured 100 feet (30 meters) in diameter. It launched Aug. 12, 1960.

This is fantastic and gives hope for the future of mankind. So, they will be launching the Jame Webb telescope in 2018 to get a better look at these planets, three of which are supposedly habitable.

40 light years away is considered very close. Here is the math:

Quote:The above graph shows Voyager 2's heliocentric velocity (red) alongside the computed Sun-system escape velocity (blue) calculated from 12v2e=GM⊙r. One can see that, at 40 astronomical units, after all the flybys are done, and therefore after Voyager 2 has gotten all the kinetic energy it can from the assisting planets, the helocentric velocity is about 17.5kms−1 whereas the escape velocity (essentially the gravitational potential deficit expressed as a kinetic energy) is 5kms−1, thus the fraction of Voyager's kinetic energy leftover after achieving infinite separation from the Sun is 17.52−5217.52

and so the spaceship's velocity in this state will be:

whence the travel time for 40 light years will be 40×30000016.8≈700000years

So, it will take 700,000 years with our present technology - we need warp drive technology now - or a worm hole!

yup.gif As usual, nothing too relevant.
Not even worth a press conference.

Hey JR. Yeah, when we look at the math it is definitely not relevant - now.
