Over 20 houses have been destroyed and 50 people injured after a fire broke out in the heritage village of Lærdalsøyri on the Sognefjord, north of Bergen.

"It is a disaster. For those who are there it is an inferno. There are flames and smoke everywhere and a powerful wind that makes the situation very difficult," Lærdal's deputy mayor and chief physician Geir Berge Overland told NRK.

According to a press release from Lærdal Municipality, at least 23 buildings had been destroyed by 7am on Sunday morning, three of which are in the historical conservation area, treasured for its unique wooden buildings.

Well nobody died, but 350 have been checked at the hospital and 40 still remain there. 30 houses burned down. sad2.gif

They're still worried about explosions.

A similar village here, quite old. Everybody fears a lightning strike if the summer is dry.
The building with the red roof and turret is the Masons lodge. chuckle.gif

Dozens of buildings in a heritage village in southern Norway have been destroyed in a blaze.

Laerdalsoyri is famous for its unique wooden buildings and thousands of tourists visit the small village every year.

Leiv Thomas Faulkner, 18, told the BBC's Anna Holligan that he lost everything in the fire including photos of his father - who died in 2012.

The fire flared up at 5 am this morning, thankfully not close to any houses. The wind is still brisk in the area so it's still a potentially dangerous situation.

35 houses have been destroyed, including this:

Quote:A 200-year-old Grade II listed wooden house was razed to the ground by the fire in the historic village of Lærdalsoyri over the weekend.
