The whole episode was caught on CCTV as Fernando Caignet Aguilera, 64, entered the Santa Ana Market in Miami on December 10.
He offered the reptile for sale after reportedly finding it in a nearby park, however staff at the convenience store instead called police.
He has now been hit with charges relating to illegally capturing the animal and trying to sell it.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said: ‘I have never experienced anything like this in 25 years in law enforcement.’
‘This is absolutely bizarre…it makes no sense to me. [The alligator] was pretty much in good shape, we didn’t notice any unusual conditions on it,’ he told NBC Miami.
Things went from bad to worse for Aguilera when he lunged at a WSVN photographer, who was among other members of the media congregated outside his home seeking an interview.
He allegedly demanded money for the interviews before the attack and a report has apparently been filed against him.
