I have always lived in gloomy and gothic southern New England and we are not so far away removed in time from the eastern European born fear and paranoia of our superstitious past thats still lingering all around us and within us and its quite amazing and frightening and very strange and bizarre and weird to realize that real professional vampire hunters were actually still being employed around here not so long ago in nineteen fifteen...

Quote: It is a historical fact that there were hundreds of graves opened or dug up and many times it was said that it was clear the body had moved or there was fresh blood in the coffin with the person. Often on the lips of the deceased. The families of the newly deceased were quite often the vampire hunters but there were in the late 1800's up through 1915 professional vampire hunters in the New England area. The professional vampire hunters guaranteed to clear a community of vampires. Some were charlatans trying to make a quick buck or two but a few were quite serious and took their task of vampire hunting very serious.

Quote: It has also been suggested by scholars that Bram Stoker, the author of the novel Dracula, knew about the Mercy Brown case through newspaper articles and based the novel's character Lucy upon her.

Very strange. In Europe, there are several well documented cases that make a compelling argument that vampires, or something extraordinary was going on at one point.
Of course, it didn't help they were accidentally burying people alive back then. damned.gif

Accounts of Vampire Sightings in Rhode Island

According to Ghost Village, the story of Mercy Brown dates back to the winter of 1892. A resident of Exeter, RI, the 19-year-old girl died of an unknown illness, but people around town began to report seeing her walking around. When Mercy's dead body was examined in the spring, her body reportedly still looked alive. According to the legend, Mercy's heart was removed in order to end her wanderings. Yeah it must really suck big time to suffer so horribly while dying from tuberculosis at such a young age and then have your paranoid family demonize you as being a walking dead vampire lurking around sucking the life from the living (the ultimate scapegoat?!) and then desecrate your grave and dig up your newly deceased body and ritualistically burn and devour parts of your withering corpse further spreading the fear and the disease...

It seems stories about blood drinking creatures go back thousands of years, the modern vampire is only a few hundred years old. It's interesting nonetheless.

Quote: Christopher Coleman's Strange Tales of The Dark and Bloody Ground reports that just before WWI in the hill country of Bradley County, Tennessee, road workers uncovered an old unmarked grave. The mummified remains of a woman had a stake driven in its heart! As archaeologists or folklore scholars continue to look, perhaps other vampires will show up? Look around. Is there someone in your own community still waiting to stake a vampire?
