Most beta fish grow up never seeing any other animals except their own, other day i used my hand to mimic the movements of a sea anemae and its natural reaction was to hide immediately and i was 6 feet away too! How interesting

You should try it with a shark suit on, see if they react to that.

But sure they would have that genetically encoded. Fear of spiders for instance isn't particularly useful in Finland, but it's common in humans, so it's not that shocking fish would have these reflexes.

dunno but as far as i know every phobia is "learned" (classical conditioning vicarious or instructional fear acquisition). the fear of spiders often comes from your parent's reactions to spiders and does not seem to be evolutionary as some indigenous tribes live with spiders or even eat them without fearing them at all.
i think it's more some sort of cultural phenomenon.

i hate spiders. i need to kill them as soon as i see them.

No I think some instincts are genetically engrained regardless of culture. Like parakeets for instance, they're bred in captivity, but I think they'd still instinctively get out of the way from a bird of prey. I'm not going to test my theory regarding this 13.gif
