The Ukraine is becoming an East West proxy war, I don't much care for the implications of that.
This could end badly. It has that potential.

Ukraine Slashes Nat Gas Imports By 80%

Earlier in the thread I thoughtlessly asked what Russia has to defend.

İmage

Their EU market. If Russia can't their LNG to Europe it doesn't matter a damn what price they put on it. Article says (snipped)

Quote:Ukraine's state oil and gas company, Naftogaz, has slashed gas imports from Russia's Gazprom to 28 million cubic meters per day as of February 24 from 147 million, two Russian industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.
..................
Ukraine consumes about 55 billion cubic meters of gas each year, and more than half is imported from Russia. Gazprom exported 161.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe last year

Having a time wrapping my head around the numbers. Annualy, Ukraine consumes ~16% of the LNG Gazprom exports to them. (0.5 x 55 / 161) but cutting imports to Ukraine by 80% ...

*Edit.. depending on how much is exported through Ukraine. That'd be 147 million/day x 365 = 53.6 billion of Europe's LNG goes through Ukraine less 16% Ukraine keeps. Roughly 1/3 of Europe's LNG from Russia is not flowing. That's going to have a really bad affect on prices.

Quote:A Gazprom official declined to comment on Naftogaz import volumes but said Russian gas transit to Europe was unaffected.

will not affect their supply? Something odd is happening, they can't hope to hurt Russia as much as Ukraines and even more, Europeans.

Russia admits that it has moved troops in Ukraine

Russia has finally confirmed that it has moved troops into Ukraine's restive Crimea region, after speculation about Moscow's involvement

İmage

Russian troops have moved into Crimea in what Moscow is calling a mission to “protect Black Sea Fleet’s positions” but which the Ukrainian government has denounced as an “armed intervention.”
The Russian foreign ministry said Friday that it had informed the Ukrainian government that armoured units from the Black Sea Fleet base near Sevastopol had entered Crimea in order to protect fleet positions.

21.01 AFP has reported that Russian aircraft carrying nearly 2,000 suspected troops have landed at a military air base near the regional capital of the restive Crimean peninsula, according to an official in Kiev's new government.
"Thirteen Russian aircraft landed at the airport of Gvardeysky (near Simferopol) with 150 people in each one," Sergiy Kunitsyn, the Ukrainian president's special representive in Crimea, told the local ATR television channel, adding the air space had been closed. It was not immediately clear if Russia had the right to use the base or send additional troops there under its agreements with Ukraine.
Caution should be exercised before calling this an "invasion" right now - the new Kiev government may be panicking.
