Scientists develop spray-on battery

Quote:Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have come up with a technique to break down each element of the traditional battery and incorporate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any surface.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Pulickel Ajayan, who leads the team on the project.

The rechargeable battery is made from spray-painted layers, with each representing the components of a traditional battery: two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.

One limitation of the technology is in the use of difficult-to-handle liquid electrolytes and the need for a dry and oxygen-free environment when making the new device.

The researchers are looking for components that would allow construction in the open air for a more efficient production process and greater commercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on the project, believes the technology could be integrated with solar cells to give any surface a stand-alone energy capture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the device using nine bathroom tiles coated with the paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes for six hours, providing a steady 2.4 volts.

Sweet! This holds a lot of promise for solar power!

Wow! Stand alone energy capture and storage capability is mega innovation. If they ever get that solar paint to market they have been working on for 10 years 13.gif roof panels could me made for the entire house.

10 years? Seems like it was at least 25 years ago I thought that stuff held a lot of promise when my dad told me about it. time.gif

But hey, storage of that stuff has always been the main problem so if it will be available to the regular consumer in a couple of years I'm really all for it. time.gif

It would be awesome if every roof could be covered with paint-on solar cells! Especially if they could finally make decent storage cells.

That 's the proverbial ticket, having a bunch of conventional batteries stacked in a building all rigged up with jumper cables is an accident waiting to happen.

It would make for some serious issues in house fires too.

Sure would, I've seen those systems and was impressed until we got to the battery shed. damned.gif An exploding battery can be like a grenade under the right circumstances.

Oh but common sense would put the 2, solar cells and storage, separately. coffeetime.gif

Jesus H Christ on a short bus, is that the best you can do? Is this your first time on the internet? That drivel wasn't even worth the minute effort it took to click on the thread. If you don't start doing better than this I will quit responding and then how will you won't get the attention you so desperately crave in your miserable, insignificant, tiny little, empty life. The only attention you will get will be the stuffed animals sitting around you watching you pop Oxycontin and playing dress up in little girl clothes and clown makeup. No, if you want my attention you will have to earn it. Now, either show me what you've got or ğck off, Junior. You're boring me.
