The family of a blind woman who killed her healthy guide dog so it could be buried alongside her have suffered a hate campaign and received death threats, it was revealed today.

Shelia Stadler, 68, from Terre Haute, Indiana, died of cancer with her five-year-old guide dog Toffee by her side on March 8.

A few days later later her son Andy had the healthy dog put down so it could placed in Mrs Stadler's coffin to fulfil her dying wish.

But the controversial decision has provoked a huge backlash in the town with Mrs Stadler's son receiving death threats - and even suffering abuse from members of his own family

They killed the dog to bury it with her. I am speechless here (not just 'cause I'm typing either!) I would think a skilled trained dog as young and healthy as that could have been donated to help another disabled person, or allowed to retire. The lack of compassion and reason these days.......

sad2.gif That's just wrong. I guess the Egyptians did that too, but still a healthy working dog shouldn't be put down for that in this day and age. tissueguy.gif

sad2.gif What an awful thing to do. So much time and effort in training a guide dog, not to mention they are worth SERIOUS money.
I grew up about a half hour away from there, this is not common behavior. Those people are absolute idiots. gaah.gif

If true, Mrs Stadler is not the only owner to request such a burial in recent years.

The woman requested the dog be put down. Her family, however murderously, followed her wishes.

I had to get my puppy, Taco put down. He was doing fine one minute and the next, got sick, with a neurological disorder. I cried for days. To think someone put a healthy dog down is just crazy. Here's my little buddy. I miss him.
